Clearnet escaping prepaid `ghetto'

Clearnet Communications has launched an advertising campaign to counter negative connotations of prepaid services. Clearnet has plans to offer prepaid wireless Web services this month. The prepaid market, according to Clearnet communications manager Mark Langton, has a negative image associated with technologically-backward telephones used by people that are incapable of post-pay payments. Clearnet's Pay & Talk campaign will feature a duck icon created by Taxi Advertising & Design.

Telus dials up Lanyon, AMW

Vancouver, Canada-based Lanyon Phillips Communications Inc. has been selected by Telus Advanced Communications to take care of its business and consumer advertising. The account is estimated to be approximately C$10 million. Telus Pres Roy Osing indicated that the overall strategic branding proposed by Lanyon Phillips was the deciding factor. Other advertising agencies competing for the account included Ogilvy and Mather, and Palmer Jarvis DDB.

Cleveland's First Energy picks BFS

First Energy of Cleveland, OH, has chosen Bryant Fulton and Shee (BFS) of Vancouver, British Columbia, to help in its marketing campaign. The advertising agency will be working with Enhanced Marketing Services Corp (EMS), also of Vancouver, to help First Energy stay competitive in the deregulated marketplace. The energy company has a marketing budget of about $3 million to $5 million.
